These Green Sprouts Stainless Steel Sippy cups and bottles have been recalled.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently sent out a recall alert for stainless steel straw bottles, sippy cups and sip and straw cups manufactured by the Green Sprouts company.

More than 10,500 bottles and cups for toddlers are targeted by the recall. In its notice, the CPSC cited concerns about potential lead poisoning that could occur in children if the bottom part of the products break off.

According to the commission’s statement: “ The recalled stainless-steel bottles and cups bottom base can break off, exposing a solder dot that contains lead, posing a lead poisoning hazard to the child.”   No poisoning reported

The commission has not received any reports of lead poisoning associated with Green Sprouts cups and a New York Times article reported that Green Sprouts is aware of seven incidents in which the base broke. 

Still, the commission recall alert stressed, “Lead is toxic if ingested by young children, and can cause adverse health effects.” According to the World Health Organization, exposure to high levels of lead exposure in children can cause comas, convulsions and even death. 

In the Puget Sound region, the recalled products (6-once and 8-ounce aqua, green, navy and pink colored cups pictured above) may have been purchased in store at Buy Buy Baby and Whole Foods stores or online at Amazon, Buy Buy Baby, Bed Bath & Beyond, FaceBook Marketplace and other new or used sales outlets. Or they have been given away freely on sites like the Buy Nothing Project or Craigslist between January 2020 and September 2022, the commission said. Green Sprouts response

Green Sprouts released a recall statement on its website .

“There is negligible risk to the health and safety of users,’’ the statement said. “We are undertaking the costs and challenges of this recall voluntarily because our customers’ health and safety must come first.” Stay informed about issues affecting Seattle-area families. The company added that the solder dot was not intended to be accessible – and so was not tested by a safety lab. In future, the company said, it will not use any lead in its sippy cups.  Parts of cups are reuseable

In the meantime, the company stresses that the plant-plastic and silicone lid and spout of the recalled cups remains safe and can be used with other Green Sprouts cups and bottles.

The company is trying to contact buyers and will refund anyone who purchased one of the recalled products. High levels of lead exposure in children can cause comas, convulsions and even death, according to the World Health Organization.
